KEN WHITE Tribute
Swindon's Special Artist

A Whiter Shade of Rail
Ken’s gifts were more than you could shake a mahl stick at;
his palette included: oil, acrylic, watercolour, lino cuts;
talent, cautious courage: a time-generous, old curmudgeon
Ken’s kaleidoscopic, art mountain, courses Swindon’s bloodline
men in caps; men on bikes; hammered-out muscles
Like many of us, Ken may have, at times, driven his family up the wall
yet he drove, our eyes, up the wall, our 100 Mural Man successfully
Blondini-balanced commercialism with personal, intuitive paintings
All in all, it’s not just another Ken on the Oasis Wonderwall Wall!
Ken loved both learning and teaching; between many
Works’ Hooter blasts, Ken cap-tipped to the working man
Ken may not have suffered fools gladly yet talked with anyone
Ken adored his family, their grandchildren, garden-ferns, their cats
sweaty backs; proper people on walls; proper Swindon workers on walls
Always sketching, (despite dad’s disapproval); at 10,
virgin painter Ken, (little did he know) won an Adver prize
15 year old Ken hot-stepped to hot-rivet Inside;
sidestepped soonest to Signwriting … then, Ken escaped
Escaped to rich mix of Swindon Art School with fellow students
Gilbert O’Sullivan, Rick ‘Supertramp’ Davies, and Justin Hayward
up road at Commonweal School leading to, up the Kings and Goldhawk
Roads as cool dude in footsteps of Flower Power Swinging Sixties
bent backs leaning into wind by Railway Village back to backs
Mini-skirted Jan, as his (to-be) Lifelong Lover’s Rock
helped our Son of a Railway Factory Worker hold his
head above paintbrush water amongst such up n’ comings
as: Cream, XTC, Alexis Korner and The Beatles (naked)
Obvious who Richard Branson was gonna’ call to logo his Virgin;
Ken created the iconic nose-cone ‘Scarlet Lady’, based on Peruvian
Alberto Vargas, and Memphis Belle-type, scanty-clads;
so Beyond our Ken flew way, way beyond his Magic Roundabout
Branson’s Town House Studios: Ken played his Trompe l’oeil trump card
At close quarters, Ken witnessed, craftsmanship of steam train makers;
Ken’s craft was painting Railworks’ men and women scrubbing doorsteps
Smoke yes, but no ‘smoke n’mirrors’ as his figurative art ran true to life
factory smoke; train smoke, by our painter brushstroke bloke
After local and international fame, Ken was London Gallery-famed
Not before time, but just in time; on his lifelong Industrial Art
Mayfair Gallery dined out with Ken; Ken wasn’t negatively framed
Ken’s paintings were framed, but Ken, Ken was never tamed.
A Dragon mural mesmerised schoolchildren (but it wasn’t Kens!)
Thamesdown Art’s Terry Court spotted Ken’s Golden Lion Talent
Ken welcomed people to his Pandora’s Paint Box, Tardis Studio
Swindon Artists agree “Ken’s a talented, supportive, eternal, pioneer”
men in caps; men on bikes; hammered out muscles

sloping buildings, foreshadow weary workers walking home
fiery skies, salute our elderly painter-artist, walking home
