The long anticipated news of the end of World War 2 resulted in spontaneous celebrations breaking out across the country. VE and VJ DAY CELEBRATIONS.
8th May: VE DAY: A national holiday was declared and people from all walks of life came together to mark the moment.
VJ DAY: The war in the East did not end until 15 August 1945, when Japan surrendered. The day was celebrated across the world as ‘Victory over Japan’ (VJ Day).
The 80th anniversary of VE Day is a time for a nation to come together to learn about the stories of those that served and the VE Day generation, from the servicemen who fought, to children who were evacuated, and women on the home front.
SWINDON: 4-7pm outside Swindon's Council Offices, speeces, flag raising, bring food food for a street party!
MARLBOROUGH 6.30-9.30pm on The Common. Food, cars, funfair, live music.
All the villages host events and celebrations.
The REME Museum in Lyneham is marking the occasion with activities, events, and campaigns. May 10 and 11th: an expanded version of its annual 'Wartime Britain' event, featuring 1940s re-enactments and demonstrations.
Local history groups, including the Wiltshire Home Guard and the Gloucestershire Regiment Re-enactment Group, will participate.
The museum's Reserve Vehicle Collection will also feature World War 2 era vehicles.
